In this second volume on the nucleus of Eugene Berman’s works preserved at the Forte Sangallo in Civita Castellana, 165 albums by the artist are published, containing more than 8,000 sheets by his own hand.
Dated and named by the author himself in relation to their content, they have been grouped here into four major sections,
entitled in accordance with the original name: Miscellaneous (Varia), Travels (Viaggi), Home/Collection (Casa/Collezione)
and Theatre (Teatro).
The Varia section consists of 23 albums containing sketches and preparatory drawings for paintings, illustrations, murals, furniture and architectural projects from the period between 1933 and 1972. The Travels section is the most substantial, counting no less than 78 albums containing sketches and preparatory drawings made by the artist during his countless travels between 1936 and 1972. The Theatre section, which is also very voluminous, has 39 albums containing sketches, drawings and preparatory projects for multiple plays and musical ballets, dated between 1936 and 1972. Finally, the Home/Collection section brings together 25 albums dated between 1960 and 1970, containing purchase notes, lists of art galleries and antique dealers, projects and sketches referring to the artist’s Roman home in Palazzo Doria Pamphilj and his immense art collection.
The volume has the nature of a veritable repertory of images, valuable for tracing the artist’s sources of inspiration. The analysis of the individual sheets has in fact made it possible to recognise the paintings, architecture, monuments and landscapes that fuelled Eugene Berman’s visionary imagination. Some specific instances are given in the introductory texts to each individual section.
It should be noted that not all the images in the volume are perfectly legible, both because in some of the artist’s sketches the stroke is extremely faint, and because the inventory and photographic reproduction of each sheet was not preceded by cleaning or restoration work.
